The most important function is to provide leadership for the congregational singing of hymns and service music at liturgies. Selected from a wide variety of musical styles, the repertoire ranges from traditional chant to spirituals and contemporary choral. Members must be able to carry a tune, attend rehearsal and participate in liturgies as scheduled. Reading music is helpful but not essential.
Parishioners who wish to serve as Cantors will need to audition with the Director of Music and belong to the Adult Choir. Extra rehearsal time and willingness to serve at any liturgy is important. Cantors need to have strong, clear, pleasant voices, and a basic understanding of music notation.
Qualified volunteer instrument players are welcome to enhance music at Saint Matthew on a regular basis. Guitarists, wind players, percussionists and pianists are all invited. Guitarists should be able to play standard hymns and read chords or lead sheets. All other instrument players should be able to read music, and play most hymns with a minimum amount of practice. Anyone wishing to help out should contact the Director of Music
This choir is for children who will be in grades 3-5 in the fall. Youth in grades 6-8 are recruited to serve as leaders for this ensemble. Children in Junior Choir will receive vocal and musical training, along with knowledge and experience in Catholic liturgy. The choir will sing at all family masses and other special holidays and liturgies.
TEEN CHOIR (ROCK & REJOICE)
Rock & Rejoice is Saint Matthew’s newest ensemble in our Music Ministry. It is open to all teens who are enrolled and actively participating in Faith Formation or YDisciple programs, and who are dedicated to ministry. We are looking for talented musicians who can sing and perhaps play an instrument as well. Members will be expected to attend all rehearsals held on Sundays at 4:00 PM. They are also expected to learn about and understand liturgy and how music fits into our liturgical worship. Rock & Rejoice leads Joy & Devotion – our weekly worship for Faith Formation on Wednesdays, and will play Sundays at the 6:00 PM Mass as our repertoire and experience allows.
